Duty duly returns to front at Willamette Speedway

LEBANON, Oregon -- John Duty hadn’t raced his Super Late Model at Willamette Speedway in some two years.

He didn’t show much sign of being rusty in his triumphant return last Saturday, August 28.

The Molalla driver easily claimed Saturday’s 40-lap main event. Other winners on the night at the 1/3-mile dirt oval were Albany’s Bricen James in IMCA Modifieds, Scio’s Steve Moore in Super Sports, Lebanon’s Dalton Bloom in Sportsman, Monmouth’s Sam Potter in Street Stocks, and Dexter’s Brad Martin in the IMCA Sport Compacts.

In Super Late Models, Duty set fast time with a lap of 14.664 seconds. Heat races were won by James Slover and Bryan Norton.

Mark Thompson started up front for the main event, with Duty slotting in fifth. Duty quickly moved up through the field, taking fourth on lap 4, third two laps later, and second on lap 9. He passed Thompson for the lead on lap 15 and never looked back, taking the win by 4.558 seconds over Thompson. Rounding out the top-five were Norton, Jordan Wright and B.J. Donifrio.

In the IMCA Modified class, Doug Davenport narrowly edged Matthew Drager for top qualifying spot, with a lap of 16.270 seconds. The two would split the heat races, with Jeffrey Hudson starting up front for the 30-lap main event. A week after winning the 100-lapper in Lebanon, James started seventh and struggled to move up early, but took advantage of some battling to take over the lead on lap 12. James led the rest of the way to win by 4.242 seconds over Jake Mayden. Rounding out the top five were Dan Philpott, Hudson, and Davenport.

In Super Sports, Steve Moore set fast time with a lap of 16.399 seconds. Moore also won the heat race, then started the 25-lap main event behind Terry Sanders and Salem’s Greg Henrich. Moore passed Henrich for second on lap 5, then got around Sanders on lap 16 on the way to winning by 1.745 seconds. Sanders, Henrich, Shane Davis and Clint Young completed the top-five finishers.

Daniel Ray set fast time in Sportsman qualifying with a lap of 17.398 seconds. Heat races were won by Trevor Mackey, James Slover, and Aaron Bloom. Garrett Craig stated the 25-lap main on pole alongside Dalton Bloom. The two stayed in those positions until Bloom took the lead on lap 15, a spot he would not relinquish on the way to his first win. Ray Bloom moved up to second late and finished .852 seconds behind. Rounding out the top-five finishers were Greg Schellhorn, Aaron Bloom, and Alex Emry.

In Street Stocks, Albany’s Rod McCombs set fast time by touring the track in 18.369 seconds. Heat races were won by Dom Conti and Phill Lovvorn. Potter lined up sixth for the 24-lap main, but quickly moved up to fourth as Kevin Scoffield took the initial lead. Potter moved up to second place on lap 8, then got by Scoffield for the lead on lap 18. McCombs moved into second on lap 22, with Potter holding on by .269 seconds at the end. Behind Potter and McCombs were McKenzie Thompson, Andy Breshears and Scoffield.

In the IMCA Sport Compacts, Martin’s qualifying time of 19.358 seconds was just enough to top Cottage Grove’s Kerry Cooper. Martin was edged out in his heat race by Tiffany Towns, while Andrew Wright took top honors in the second heat. Towns started the 20-lap main up front, with Martin settling into second. Martin took the lead on lap 7 and held off Cooper by .544 seconds for the win. Rounding out the top five were Rex Eckley, Cole Trissell and Wright.
