Inside Line Promotions – CHICO, Calif. (Sept. 11, 2017) – Austen Wheatley produced his best result of the season with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series last Wednesday during the only race of the season in Oregon for ‘The Greatest Show on Dirt.’

Wheatley opened the night by qualifying 12th quickest before he finished where he started – fourth – in a heat race. That locked him into the 12th starting position for the main event.

“The track was around the bottom,” he said. “I think Jason Johnson was the only guy making the top work. There wasn’t cushion, but a tiny moisture patch on the fence. On the initial start I gained a few spots, but they called it back. On the second start instead of passing three cars I was passed by three cars. We were fighting for the bottom the rest of the race.”

Wheatley ended with a 15th-place result.

He then ventured to Silver Dollar Speedway for the Gold Cup Race of Champions, which began on Friday with a fueling problem. That relegated Wheatley to the 18th quickest time in his group during qualifying.

“Once you get buried in qualifying with the World of Outlaws you’re in trouble,” he said. “You start at the back of everything and it’s a tough hill to climb.”

Wheatley placed eighth in a heat race, second in the C Main and 10th in the Last Chance Showdown.

Unfortunately, Saturday’s finale didn’t fare any better as Wheatley ran into mechanical problems during hot laps and he was unable to start a race the rest of the night.

Wheatley is slated to race with the World of Outlaws this Friday and Saturday at Calistoga Speedway in Calistoga, Calif., for the Wine Country Outlaw Showdown. It will mark his first visit to the half-mile oval since placing a career-best 18th in 2015.

“Our half mile program is better than our small track program,” he said. “For whatever reason I tend to do better on the bigger tracks. I’m really looking forward to next weekend.”
