Willamette Speedway would see the return of the Coors Clay Cup on Saturday July 19th. Classes in competition included the X-Factor Race Cars Super Late Models, Crocker’s Cars Super Sports, Albany & Eastern Railroad Sportsman, and Street Stocks.

The X-Factor Race Cars Super Late Model main event would be a bit of a caution filled affair but when it was all said and done it would be a familiar face in victory lane. Albany’s Casey Vitale would return to a track that he has had so much success at by leading every single lap of the Coors Clay Cup for car owned Tony Brakeall. He would keep all challengers at bay as he mastered the 1/3-mile clay oval in the Sureflow Concrete Pumping Service/James Gang Pizza/Liberty Automotive/Swing Construction #13 Swartz in his first appearance of the year.

Finishing in second would be the Thomas Hunziker owned Spirit Fueled Racing/Gray’s Automotive/AM-1 Roofing #38 Victory Circle driver by Tangent native Trevor Glaser with Bend’s Rob Mayea crossing the wire in third in his J&S Farms/Cornett Racing Engines/Tim Logan Racing #37 Rocket. The rest of the top five would be made up of Brian Cronk out of Portland in the Metro Services/Dog Lovers Gold Dog Food/Big Sky Landscaping/Gassner Trucking #29 Rocket in fourth while fifth was the Don Frank Flooring/Mid Ohio Graphics/Darrell and Mardell Williams #5 Rocket of John Duty from Happy Valley.

Hillsboro’s Vahn Stone was a rocketship for much of the Crocker’s Cars Super Sport main event. Stone, in his Stone Racing #17 Rayburn, blazed the trail in the first half of the main event. Able to make a move for the lead in the back half of the lap count was Sweet Home’s Brian Thompson. Thompson, in the Crocker’s Cars/Left Coast Motorsports #44 Swartz, would hold on to win his first ever main event win.

Albany native Bricen James would finish second in his James Gang Pizza/Lebanon Auto Body/Sign Express/Rainbow Rentals #13 MasterSbilt while in third was Gil Pickett from Salem in the Gil Pickett Custom Cabinets/G&B Natural Health/Airport Steel/Santiam Barn & Supply #98 Swartz. Kyle Yeack, from Lebanon, would chauffeur the Phil Housworth owned Crocker’s Cars/Wirth Wireless #32 Bullitt to a fourth place finish over Sweet Home’s Curt Fry in fifth driving his All Star Auto Repair, Sales, and Towing/KFIR AM 720 #32 Shaw.

It looked like Lebanon’s Jeff Rash was well on his way to winning his third main event victory of 2014 in the Albany & Eastern Railroad Sportsman. Unfortunately he would have a tire go down on the final lap resulting in the Glen Hackney owned Hackney Racing/Wirth Wireless #1 Swartz having to surrender the lead. Taking over the position and capturing the win was his teammate Steve Moore from Scio in the Glen Hackney owned Hackney Racing/Wirth Wireless #3 Swartz. It would be Moore’s first win in the Sportsman this year but his second win overall this season.

The Royalty Homes #43 Avenger of Sandy Sanders from Junction City would finish in second followed by the Glen Hackney owned Hackney Racing/Wirth Wireless #2 Swartz of Brian Smith out of Albany. In fourth was Coos Bay’s Dave Foote in the Jon Inskeep Racing Engines/Dave's Race Shop/Les Schwab Tires #75 Dirt Works entry and Jeff Rash would finish in fifth.

Taking care of business and simply in dominant form in the Street Stocks would be Justin Evans from Lebanon. Evans, in the Al Flora owned Albie’s Medical Transport/Allied Medical Transport/Wirth Wireless/Monty’s Racing Repair #99 Cougar, would capture his third win of the campaign at Willamette and his sixth overall win of 2014.

The Roy and Haven Doran owned Doran Racing #47 Monte Carlo was second driven by Kyle Yeack and in third was the Big Sky Landscaping #88 Camaro of Kevin Roberts out of Gresham. The rest of the top five would consist of Bricen James in his James Gang Pizza/Lebanon Auto Body/Sign Express/Rainbow Rentals #13 Monte Carlo in fourth followed by Salem’s Randy Jackson in the Precision Towing/Hillyer Tire & Wheel #24 Camaro.

Willamette Speedway will be back in action for a doubleheader on Friday July 25th and Saturday the 26th for the conclusion of the 2014 Wild West Modified Speedweek. The support class for both nights will be the Northwest Extreme Late Model Series.

On Friday the Racing is scheduled to get underway around 6:30 PM while on Saturday the Pit Gates will open at 1:00 PM, the Pit Meeting will take place at 2:30, Front Gates open at 3:30, and Racing starts at 6:00.
