James, Winebarger, D. Cronk, And Muse Get Willamette Ladies Night Wins
By Ben Deatherage
Lebanon, Oregon- Despite showers the day before it was not enough to cancel the Saturday, May 6th Ladies Night races at Willamette Speedway. The historic 1/3-mile clay oval would see some fantastic competition throughout the evening. Classes in action included the Super Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, and Hornets.

The Super Late Model division would have their first main event of 2017 after rain washed out their feature the week before. It would be a race of attrition with several cautions occurring. Towards the end of the race it looked like it was Brian Cronk’s night.

Cronk, of Portland, would get a flat tire with just a few laps to go forcing him to retire early. It handed the lead over to Albany’s Bricen James. James would hold off the rest of the competition to be the first Late Model winner of the new season.

Lebanon’s Jeff Rash had an impressive runner-up finish followed by Thomas Hunziker, out of Bend, in third. Scio native Steve Moore got fourth while Brian Cronk finished his evening in fifth.

The IMCA Modified ranks would see practical domination from Collen Winebarger. The Corbett chauffeur would take off with the coveted top spot and never looked back. It was Winebarger’s first Modified victory in 2017 at Willamette.

Bricen James, performing double duty, would be second with Keizer’s John Campos behind him in third. The balance of the top five would include fourth finishing Brad Martion, of Warren, and Albany’s Dustin Cady, in fifth.

In the Street Stocks it was the David Cronk and Kevin Roberts show. The two drivers were issued a challenge by the crowd and local businesses for a bonus of $350.00 if either driver could come from the back and win. Both drivers would accept.

Cronk and Roberts would make their way to the front of the field within the first ten laps of the feature. The two would exchange the lead on several occasions but it would be multi-track champion David Cronk, from Portland, emerging victorious.

Gresham’s Kevin Roberts was a close second with Portland veteran Jody Tanner in third. James Baker, also from the Portland area, would cross the wire in fourth followed by Molalla’s Jesse Yankee in fifth.

In the Hornets Crystal Flath, of Corbett, would be the leader for the race. Unfortunately Flath would be involved in a red flag incident that would end the race early resulting in her having to leave by ambulance. Currently she is recovering from her injuries and would like to extend a huge thanks to Extreme Fire & Rescue as well as the Lebanon Fire Department. Albany’s Tracy Muse would inherit the lead and was declared the winner.

Eddie Farness, of Sandy, was second while Salem’s Greg Davidson was third. Fourth went to Crystal Flath and Portland’s Sean Cronk got fifth.

Willamette Speedway returns for Fighting Hunger Night on Saturday, May 13th. Fans that bring a can of food will receive $2.00 off their admission. Classes racing include IMCA Modifieds, Super Sports, Sportsman, and Street Stocks. Also, Karts return for their second race of the season Sunday, the 14th.
